Overview

Join experienced florist and tutor Kim Harrison for this inspiring 4-week Introduction to Floristry course, designed to help you develop the essential skills and techniques needed to create beautiful floral arrangements.

Suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some previous flower arranging experience, this practical course will introduce you to the fundamentals of floristry. You’ll learn how to select, purchase, and condition fresh flowers, explore the principles of floral design, and develop basic wiring techniques used in professional arrangements.

Working with a selection of seasonal British-grown and imported flowers, you’ll create a variety of floral designs using both traditional oasis-based methods and more sustainable floristry techniques. Throughout the course, Kim will provide expert guidance in a friendly and supportive environment, helping you build confidence and creativity with every arrangement.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a good foundation in floristry, a collection of beautiful arrangements, and the skills and confidence to continue your floral journey. Learners who wish to develop their knowledge further can progress onto the Floristry Improvers course in the following academic year.

Skills covered
  • Understanding how to select, purchase and condition flowers to maintain freshness and extend their lifespan.
  • Learning the basic principles of floral design, including colour, balance, proportion, shape and texture.
  • An introduction to essential floristry tools, materials and safe working practices.
  • Developing basic wiring techniques for flowers, foliage and decorative elements.
  • Creating floral displays using floral foam where appropriate.
  • Exploring more sustainable floristry methods, including foam-free construction techniques.
  • Building confidence in arranging flowers and foliage to create balanced, attractive designs.
  • All flowers, materials and equipment are provided and included in the course fee.
  • There is a large, free car park on site outside the village hall.
  • The course will take place in the smaller hall off to your right as your come through the main doors.

All participants must be over 19 years old, we can sometimes accept minors if accompanied by an adult, please contact us at enquiries@creative-communities.org.uk if you would like to discuss bringing a young person with you.

This course is part funded by West Berkshire Council and therefore, the following concessions apply.

  • If you are aged over 60 and living within the West Berkshire catchment area, you are eligible for a 30% reduction of course fees.
  • If you are in receipt of a means tested benefit at the time of enrolment, you are eligible for a 50% reduction in course fees. Learners will be required to submit evidence of their benefit at the time of enrolment, for the reduction to be applied. Evidence includes only official letters/ documentation, dated within 3 months of enrolment.
  • If you are unable to attend the course, we require a minimum of 10 working days’ notice before the start of the course in order to receive a refund. Admin fees may apply. You will also have the opportunity to transfer your fees to another course.
  • If Creative Communities are forced to cancel the course due to low enrolment numbers, you will be notified immediately and issued with a full refund, or the option to transfer your course fees to another course.
