Overview: Join experienced artist and teacher, Sarah Hemmings for this inspiring 8-week mixed media art course, designed to help you build confidence, develop new skills, and explore a wide range of artistic styles and techniques in a relaxed and supportive environment.

Suitable for beginners as well as those with previous experience, the course introduces a variety of mediums including watercolour, acrylic, pastel, line and wash and mixed media. Across the eight weeks, you’ll explore different themes and subjects such as landscapes, seascapes, wildlife, expressionism, abstract art, and realism, with each session focusing on new techniques and creative approaches.

This learner-centred course is designed to be flexible and responsive to the interests of the group. While each week includes tutor-led demonstrations, themed projects, and inspirational reference materials, you’ll also have the opportunity to pursue your own ideas and subject matter with guidance and support from Sarah. Whether you’re looking to experiment with new materials, refine your artistic practice, or simply enjoy the creative process, this course offers the perfect space to develop your skills at your own pace.

By the end of the course, you’ll have created a diverse portfolio of artwork, gained confidence across a range of media, and discovered new techniques to inspire your future creative journey.

Skills covered
  • Exploring a range of artistic media, including watercolours, acrylics, gouache, pastels, ink, collage and mixed media techniques.
  • Developing confidence in composition, observation and creative expression across a variety of subjects, including landscapes, seascapes, wildlife, florals, still life and abstract art.
  • Learning techniques for painting skies, water, trees, flowers, foliage, animals and other natural forms.
  • Experimenting with different artistic styles and approaches, including realism, impressionism, expressive painting, abstraction and textured (impasto) techniques.
  • Combining a variety of materials and processes to create original mixed media artwork using collage and other creative elements.
  • Understanding colour theory, including colour mixing, harmony, complementary colours, tints, tones and shades.
  • Building confidence to experiment, develop a personal artistic style and complete finished artworks using a range of media.

All materials and equipment for this course are provided and included in the course fee, however learners are welcome to bring their own art materials if they wish. All paper and canvasses will be provided. Learners may also wish to bring an apron.

  • There is a large, free car park on site outside the village hall.
  • The course will take place in the smaller hall off to your right as your come through the main doors.

All participants must be over 19 years old, we can sometimes accept minors if accompanied by an adult, please contact us at enquiries@creative-communities.org.uk if you would like to discuss bringing a young person with you.

  • If you are unable to attend the course, we require a minimum of 10 working days’ notice before the start of the course in order to receive a refund. Admin fees may apply. You will also have the opportunity to transfer your fees to another course.
  • If Creative Communities are forced to cancel the course due to low enrolment numbers, you will be notified immediately and issued with a full refund, or the option to transfer your course fees to another course.
