Overview
Join experienced crafter, Sarah Hemmings, for a relaxing and creative needle felting workshop, where you’ll learn how to sculpt a charming three-dimensional robin from wool roving.
Suitable for beginners as well as those with some needle felting experience, this hands-on workshop will guide you through the process of building a realistic bird form, adding shape and character before creating and attaching delicate wire legs and feet. Along the way, Sarah will share a wealth of tips, techniques, and needle felting skills to help you develop your confidence and bring your creation to life.
By the end of the session, you’ll have a beautifully handcrafted felted robin to take home, along with the knowledge and inspiration to continue exploring this rewarding craft.

Skills covered
- An introduction to needle felting, including the safe use of felting needles, tools and materials.
- Understanding the properties of wool fibres and how they are sculpted into three-dimensional forms.
- Creating realistic body shapes, proportions and textures using layering and shaping techniques.
- Learning how to blend and build colour to add depth, shading and character.
- Attaching wire legs and assembling individual components to create a stable, freestanding robin.
- Adding fine details and finishing touches to bring personality and realism to the finished piece.
- Developing confidence in needle felting techniques that can be applied to future 3D fibre art projects.

All materials and equipment for this course are provided and included in the course fee.
Useful information
- Parking is free on site; please ensure you use the entrance on Arlington Lane. There is a car park at the bottom of the lane upon entrance to your left and a smaller car park outside of Arlington Arts Centre. There are disabled bays outside the venue, if the barrier is down, please use the speaker to the right of the barrier to contact the staff who will open the barrier for you.Â
Course requirements
- All participants must be over 19 years old, we can sometimes accept minors if accompanied by an adult, please contact us at enquiries@creative-communities.org.uk if you would like to discuss bringing a young person with you.
Cancellation policy
- If you are unable to attend the course, we require a minimum of 10 working days’ notice before the start of the course in order to receive a refund. Admin fees may apply. You will also have the opportunity to transfer your fees to another course.
- If Creative Communities are forced to cancel the course due to low enrolment numbers, you will be notified immediately and issued with a full refund, or the option to transfer your course fees to another course.
